Welcome to Emerald City!!! On June 1, 2010 on the Lower East Side, my Hommie, Baron, threw a HOT party with a purpose called Emerald City. The night will featured music and performances from some of the top LGBT artist of Urban Music and their Allies. He'd been wanting to put together a party that has everyone involved in the experience. I think he found the answer. Have you've ever been to a Live Mixtape! No! Well baby... u missed out. Being in NYC, i get theoppurtunity to hear alot of live music. Usually, the performers are someone on the Radio, wishing they could be on the Radio, properly styled for MTV/BET, while pimping their product on Itunes. While the Emerald City crew is all of those things, they were also inspiring.
I mean, when can you hear a mid tempo love song sung by 2 sexy men? How about a Battle wrap between a Boss Chick (Hard Lezbian!!!!! *grin*) and a Fashion craving Butch Queen (Gay dude)? The performances Spoke to me.

Last Thursday, I found myself what I momentarily thought to be a rendition of Alice in Wonderland’s mad tea (hat) party starring all the pretty dantie celebrities and reality stars (courtesy of Bravo of course) of NYC doing hoola hoop tricks and strut the boardwalk repartee. Of course if you were there you’ll know what I mean, cause this lovely and well conceived affair presented by Village Care turned out to be a rather delightful affair which said author hopes a lot of cash was raised to help many of those afflicted with AIDS, homelessness and despair. In short it was an extravagant affair constituting a variety of the city’s best fashion designers and fashion insiders lending their hand to show off some of their latest wares but mostly as Kelly Cutrone would later impress upon me to get help to people who mostly need it, who she reminded me don’t happen to be living in some third world nation but in our very backyard.

Our host for the evening turned out to be an elf, or at least that’s what I thought when TV personality James Aguiar took to the stage looking like a delectable circus ring leader. All that was missing was the swirly moustache, but rest assured the gold shoes, sparkly clothes and over the top glitter was all there. As he implored the girls (at some point some of the girls turned into drag queens- but what do did you expect at James’ tea party kids?) to strut the plank guests abound cheered and gushed as fantastical designs corroborated by ostentatious head (hat?) wear topped each look off.

Iight, but on the real. The highlight of MY night

was meeting the one and only Pat Cleveland.

I know Im a little late sending this letter, but BAAAAYBEE... ya cuzzin has been busy.
Hew's things back in ATL? Last we spoke yo u was headed down to Cypress St to drop off ya roommate so that he could make up that back rent? That is what you said, right? I couldn't hear you that well cause I was trying to avoid this Jehovah's Witness Crack head who was $5.00. When I asked him why hes chargin for a free magazine designed to spread the word..... he told me, "If a train fare is $2.25, and a trip to Philly is $10.00 on the bus, how much do you think that a trip to Heaven costs? Help a Brotha out.... "

So some of ya message might have gotten lost. I'm writing you this letter to tell you about the time I stepped out of my comfort zone and had a crazy good time.
About 2weeks ago, NYC had a monsoon. Normally when it rains up here, its more like a sprinkle / heavy drizzle for an hour or two and a gray sky for the rest of the day. Well, not on this day. It rained and it poured and it was raining and the streets was flooded... you get it...
But it was a good day, because I got called into a job shooting a book cover. THe original photographer that they had lined up canceled on them (tsk tsk tsk, shame shame shame - R. Pelzer) . And they thought ehough to call on good ole reliable ME :)

During the shoot, i had gotten a txt from my hommie, DJ, saying that he was actually DJ'ing at a bar downtown. I Decided to go and show a little support to the brotha (Cause he always has my back)

Well, D.D. ... THe bar ended up being RAWHIDE.
I know you are like, "Whats that?"
Rawhide is a Leather Bar. Like "Tom of Finland" not "Wilsons"> A mess.

Now I like a nice leather jacket like the next brotha, but I have to personally draw the line at harnesses and whips. You will not beat me.

I was expecting a dark, dirty, dungeon of a place. Full of manacled , mustachioed men wearing chaps and no underwear. Instead, i found a room full of gauntlet wearing, mustachioed men, with the biggest brightest smiles and possessed of the warmest hearts.
And it was the very first Mr. Rawhide Pagent. Funny how I always find myself at a party.

And there was a Dog!Well, The pageant went down like any other pageant. There were four contestants who represented various aspects of the Leather community. They had an interview portion, a fetish wear portion, and something else... i forget, cause BABYYYY... those have to be the friendliest bartenders of all time.

After all was said and done, DJ and I braved the Monsoon and 8th Ave, to

drunkenly stumble down to the L train to head on home. We held each other up

by leaning our shoulders together. But we made it. :)

This post is for my play cousin down in Atlanta, GA, Drama Dupree. As you guys may or may not know, I am the House Photographer at this really hot party. Well, its THE hot gay party on a Friday here in NYC. It's called the F Word. It'd pretty awesome. People ask me all the time, "What is the F*Word?" I always say "Fun" but you know, I was informed by the creator of the party that it is indeed FUCK. Imagine that. Because of the F Word, my Friday nights are spent surrounded by Go-Go Boys, Juggling and Singing Drag Queenz, Fire Breathers, Escorts, Alcoholics in Skimpy clothes, and of course, Camera Whores. Perfect.

This is one zany crowd. You think it's a game? Wait until I put up the pics with Poor Ben, the dead rat.

It wasn’t until around midnight that the dance floors on both levels of Chelsea’s Club Rebel started to fill up (we’re pretty sure the sexy Latin go-go boys and $3 Stoli happy hour kept people distracted early on). For the first time this year, the weekly F Word Party, hosted by Mark Nelson and Michael Formika Jones, brought all walks of gay life together. Around 12:30am, we saw familiar faces (Amanda Lepore,Cazwell) assemble upstairs like old friends arriving at a dinner party—partly to schmooze, mostly to pose for photos.

You gotta Love Formika and Mark Nelson for going OFF and bringing nightlife back to NYC.

Uber! Right? Quit playin baby. You know you wish you had some hand painted, open toe, stiletto pumps to float around in on a Wednesday night.

THis night was a special one for me because at first, it seemed like it was gona be Me, Jackie, Va Nilla, and Ryan holdin it down. The wind, the cold, the RAIN...... So much rain. Like one of them Nor'Easters that you hear about. Yo, that would have been cool too. Especially with DJ Ryan McKnight spinning the and dishing the ovahness that we have come to love him for, but the crowd did not dissipation us at all.

One by one. Two by two, group after group started walking through the door. The best part? They were determined to have as much fun as we were determined to entertain them.

Give Thanx That Its Happening

OMG.... THis night was great. I've never been one much for the holiday, Thanksgiving. I always had so many er - uhm.. experiences related to the holiday. But I must say that Birdie Black and the Crew at the Hudson started this Thanksgiving off in the best way. At the stroke of midnite, we carved the Thanksgiving Vodka, and toasted to good times in the Library Room at the Hudson Hotel. Awesome? Yeah!

BTW, there is this pool table that is evidentaly older than the constitution and upon which the Virgin Mary used to change the Baby Jesus' diapers on. Everytime anyone even LOOKED at that pool table, the Maccabee in charge would threaten Damnation and Holy Retribution upon those who transgressed against its holy presence.

Yeah.... A pool table... Billiards and balls...... in the Hudson Hotel.

Birdy Black (Miss Jackie to me) is Awesome. Yes, with a capitol "A". Every since I've met this wondrously wonderful woman earlier this year, she has been a constant and uplifting joy on my soul. Yes, bitches - my SOUL. Anyway. Dex Star G , Big Brother to all and Nightlife's favorite Geigh Uncle Is naming today (and just today) "Birdy Black Day" First on the agenda? Well, uhm... how about some images from Jackie's Birthday Bash!? Anywho.... The party was awesome. Besides the usual not so usual attendees, Miss Jackie had a special surprise guest or two. The best kind by the way... Her Parents! How lucky is she! I mean, I have hung out with my mom. She's very Claire Huxtable, so even though she has done her time in every Gayboi disco den fro Houston to L.A, we have never partied together. But Jackie's mom and pop came out to the club to help the fruit of their loins do the damn thing. Speakin of which. Jackie is always saying how her mom is beautiful. After meeting her, I must say that she most definately is Inside and out! Check her out in the pic below.

Check out Kevin Aviance and DJ Nita Aviance whooping it up at the OUTmusic Awards 2009. Joy, love, and unity filled Webster Hall that night. It was a great thing to see all the people that came out to support Out (not closeted) artists and musicians do their thing.

This was a night filled with electricity. Everywhere u turned, there was something new to be amazed at, an old friend that you hadn't seen in a million years, and reasons upon reasons to smile. And the music was good also.

Kevin Aviance was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award bout the people at OUTmusic. He deserved it. He is Awesome.

This forced The Men R From Mars crew to have to find a new spot to throw their party -- LAST MINUTE.

One day last week, my hommie, D.A., asked me if I wanted to hit this party at Greenhouse with him. Greenhouse is THAT hot club, but I was jsut there o Sunday (as usual) and wasnt sure if I wanted to do a double (i.e. hitting the same venue twice in one week).

Monday.... Tuesday... The day that came after Tuesday.....

Thursday.

D.A. says to me "You wanna go to this party?" I was like... "Might as well"

We went and the shenanigans began.

Turns out that the party was the 20th Anniversary celebration for MetroSource Magazine. Painted boys, and girls, and mock covers everywhere. I had a blast....

Check out D.A. and I... tossed. Why? Cause there was an open bar on Absolut Vodka. ALl kinds. All mixes. I had to get my "Drunk Uncle" on.

I ran down to Philly for a gig, and hightailed it back to NYC for Hween. Mr. Black was hosting an event for Paper Magazine and Svedka Vodka and I was all "Sweet"

After arriving a few hours late, with a few cocktails in my system, my entourage convinced me to take a few pics.

The lights were cool, the people were determined to have fun, despite the weather and glitz-shade.

She By Sheree. I like the name of that. This past Saturday, I covered the Front Row Fashion Show which is part of the TMCF gala weekend. I had a blast.

the scoop: Its the end of the night and I was packing up my camera bag and enjoying one of the complementary drinks at the open bar ( something called a "Runway" - it was nice. Belvedere vodka and some kind of fruit juice.) when, out of the corner of my eye I saw that hair.

All sleek and shiny with movement....

And under that hair was one of the leads from one of my new favorite things, Real Housewives of ATL. -- Don't you just love how "Atlanta's Elite" are exactly like your crazy relatives? Watching that show is like watching my aunties when they get together at the family Bar B Que.

Anyhow.... Out comes the camera and there she was. I don't know about the character that they edit her into on the show, but up close and personal, she was a doll. Sweet as punch and very accommodating.

Andre Leon Talley is awesome. I had the opportunity to meet him during an event at the Faison Firehouse honoring James Baldwin.
Let me tell you why you gotta love Mr. Talley. He is a self made, all around success story who's opinion holds the weight of a on a neuton star He's a Southern Boy who was raised by his Grandmother. She tought him the meaning of luxury as she hand washed laundry and encased the beds of her home in perfectly flat and crisp corner folded sheets. Andre Leon Talley is Awesome.

Harlem, NY – On Sunday, August 2, 2009, George Faison, Founder/Artistic Director of Harlem’s new Faison Firehouse Theater created and hosted the Special Event celebrating the 85th birthday of one of America’s most celebrated author James Baldwin. The standing room only event was not only attended by family and friends of James Baldwin; but, people of the literary, performing arts and entertainment communities who were influenced by him.

"Those who say 'It can't be done' are usually interrupted by those who are doing IT!” say, Faison,

“… we are preparing the next generations of leaders here in Harlem.”

Honored speakers who shared part of their late afternoon at the Firehouse were: Playwright/Poet, Amiri Baraka; Award Winning Poet, Sonia Sanchez; Editor-at-Large of Vogue Magazine, Andre Leon Talley; Nephew of Mr. Baldwin, Trevor Baldwin, Sister-In-Law of Mr. Baldwin, Helen Baldwin; Protégé, Alexa Birdsong, Historian & Writer, Herb Boyd; Musician & Singer, Genovis Albright and Chair, English Dept. Howard University, Eleanor Traylor.

James Arthur Baldwin (1924-1987)

American writer, noted for his novels on sexual and personal identity, and sharp essays on civil-rights struggle in the United States. Baldwin also wrote three plays, a children's storybook, and a book of short stories. He gained fame with his first novel, GO TELL IT ON THE MOUNTAIN (1953), a story of hidden sins, guilt, and religious torments. In this and subsequent works Baldwin fused autobiographical material with analysis of social injustice and prejudices.

James Baldwin was born in Harlem, New York City, as the son of a domestic worker. Illegitimate, he never knew his own father and was brought up in great poverty. When he was three, his mother married a factory worker, a hard and cruel man, who also was a storefront preacher. Baldwin adopted the surname from his stepfather, who died eventually in a mental hospital in 1943. In his childhood Baldwin was a voracious reader. When he was about twelve his first story appeared in a church newspaper. At the age of 17 Baldwin left his home. After graduation from high school, he worked in several ill-paid jobs and started his literary apprenticeship.

"And it seemed to me, too, that the violence which rose all about us as my father left the world had been devised as a corrective for the pride of his eldest son, I had declined to believe in that apocalypse which had been central to my father's vision; very well, life seemed to be saying, here is something that will certainly pass for an apocalypse until the real thing comes along. I had inclined to be contemptuous of my father for the conditions of his life, for the conditions of our lives. When his life had ended I began to wonder about that life and also, in a new way, to be apprehensive about my own."

In 1983 Baldwin became Five College Professor in the Afro-American Studies department of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He spent his latter years in St. Paul de Vence on the Riviera, France, where he died of stomach cancer on November 30, 1987.

Seventh Day, Seventh Sign and Seventh Cruise… for the past 7 years, James Saunders has presented the White Party Cruise around Manhattan.

On Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 11:59pm EST over 300 Moonlight Cruisers dressed in their best summer white outfits, took a 4-hour bon voyage on the “Spirit of New York” creating great memories and dancing the night away until sunrise.

Event Producer Laurence P. returned after a year hiatus. The evening was hosted by Comedienne Tammy Peay with her special guest DJ Baker of The Doo-Dirty Radio Show. After Moonlight Cruisers dined at the buffet, they were entertained with live performs by R&B and the first female artist signed to Def Jam Alyson Williams, recording artist the SEXY Dy’Ari and we Party with B – Baron. The music was pumping and heard on all 3-decks by the amazing DJ Calvin Smith, DJ Styles, DJ Andre Collins & DJ TeaseNYC while the WPMC exotic dancers took the stage. A big shout out to the Best Dressed Winners.

So, it was like 3 weeks of hell. My camera died on me. The shutter button became unresponsive despite my best efforts. The worst part about it, was that it happened on a shoot.

The clients were understanding and allowed me to reschedule. The poblem was, that because parts had to be ordered, it took 3 weeks at a cost of ($TooDamn.much) to get it repaired.

But whatevs. All's well that ends well. :)

But you know that the first opportunity that I had to shoot something, I jumped right on it.

Enter Gary 49, Amanda Lepore, Lady Fagg and Dangerous Muse.

Lady Fagg sent me one of her infamous "La La's" saying that this group Dangerous Muse would be performing at Gary 49 that Friday. I figured that I need some practice since I'd not been in the cut for almost a month. Therefore, I went specifically to shoot shoot shoot my love all over that crowd.

IT was fun.

The band, Dangerous Muse, was AWESOME.

Everyone-- from the lead singr, to the roadie, to the Fans.... were increadibly awesome.

My second Muse ever. My first Muse, Andre J, introduced me to Trey when we were hosting at Club Lotus NYC. Well, he was hosting, I was working as the Resident Photographer *stands a little taller* My favorite thing about Trey is, he threw me my first ever B'day party. My 30th was at Marquee. Very chic. Extreemly fun. There were celebs and people and models and best of all - a cake.

I *heart* Trey. Check out one of our impromptu photo shoots. I think we had left the Heatherette party, and went to go smoke? -- I think? Well, anyway.. It was awesome. Trey is Awesome.

For real, It was Awesome. It was liek being in a video game. I saw all kinds of wierd shyt. Donkey Kong, Mario, Luigi....... I mean Everyone.

There was this laser that kept beaming happy thoughts into peoples minds. Every time it locked onto someones good vibes, it pumped even happier vibes into their brains. So many happy people.

I even saw the Princess Mushroom herself. She's a trippy Royal, but hella cool. We took a walk on a rainbow together an even shared a ride on a comet after the party.

Last night, I was sittin with my homegirl, Keisha (eating a fruit salad and getting foggy) and we got to talking about our favorite children's stories. Mine has always been "The Gift of the Maji" -- google it.

Hers on the other hand was Alice and Wonderland. I was like "Really? So you like mushrooms and happy pills?" And she was like, "uhm.. I'm a mother now Dex, I only smoke weed. And I can only do that every other weekend when my kids are with their Daddy or with my Mama"
Then I was like, " Bitch please *giggle*, yo kids is in the other room right now" as I passed her the fogg machine.

She took a puff, looked me dead in my eye and said, "yeah, but that's waaaaay in the back and its 3 in the mornin. Mama cant fly on one wing alone".

I grinned.

She gave me the side eye, and said 2 of my favorite sentences - in the language of the skreets.

"Dexter, u wanna roll? Did u bring yo camera"

I immediately thought of this set of pics that I never got around to editing..... I told her to get about 3 pulls while I connected the camera to her 52 inch flat screen (did I mention that she lives in the Projects?) 'cause the othe side of Manhattan is a Galaxy away form the life she lives.

Her eyes lit up. She turned into the Keisha I met when I first got to NYC. The uber fabulous ethnically vague girl (I still don't know if she's Black, Pueto Rican, Mixed, Jewish, Arab, Italian, Trini , Indian.... You cant tell from lookin at her) walkin down 125th street lookin like Alicia Keys 1.0 - braids and all.

"Yeeeeeeeeeees MAMA!" she yelled. Then, she whispered in the MOST conspiritorial tone, "Dexter, These Men?".

I hit the fogg machine, looked her right in the eye and said, "Baby, they are anything they want to be. "

And we laughed.

Merry Xmas ! I hope Santa Clause (or St. Lay-a-way) brought you everything you wanted this year!

Here in America, Xmas is celebrated by turning your home into a bright and festive outhouse or service shed residing in the that Winter Wonderland Industrial Park that we call Santa's Workshop.

We usually coat our homes in plastic illuminated Nativity Scenes, flying - radioactive nosed mutated forest animals, and giant candy canes. The holiday is about the spreading good will toward all men by remembering the birth of the Baby Jesus (not to be confused with the Death of BIG Jesus despite the efforts of the Easter Bunny to hide him from the Romans) and his parents being victims of a housing and health care Crisis.

I went to this Spanish Caribbean party last night. Dominicans are fun. The best part of the night (Besides the Karaoke contest) was discovering this gem.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is internationally recognized for its pioneering work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. St. Jude is the first and only pediatric cancer center to be designated as a Comprehensive Cancer Center by the National Cancer Institute. Founded by late entertainer Danny Thomas and based in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude freely shares its discoveries with scientific and medical communities around the world. St. Jude is the only pediatric cancer research center where families never pay for treatment not covered by insurance. No child is ever denied treatment because of the family's inability to pay.

I covered a St. Jude Fundraiser not too long ago. It was VERY fun and I had a blast donating my services to the organization.

Is a hoot and a half. Seriously folks. A really cool character. We hung out here and talked all about nothing and totally everything. From Obama to MoMA. Totally cool. Totally fun. I'm so gonna have an eye out for OneHalfNelson the next time I'm rockin it out.

Do I need to say why? Like, on the real.... for really real. For REALLY real real. I'm so so serious right now. *grin*

Gee wizzz..... What a frikkin party! I had a blast. So it went like this. I started missing my nightlife family from Lotus NYC and was wondering, "where had all the fun gone?" Well, at the Paper Magazine Awards, Tubway was voted the BEST GAY PARTY for 2008.

I was like,..... uhm.... and wh

y am I not there?

So I went, and I had a Blast (with a capital "B"). First off, DJ Nita, Roze Black, DJ GANT.... Artiste...... oh-M-G.

And of course, my buddy - everysince the moment I met her- Lady Fagg. Everyone was turning it out, actin a fool and just being fun.

Yeah. FUN. I mean, what party have you been to in NYC (lately) where the promoters (and not just the crowd) was generally -- Fun?

Mostly, people want to be so important that the only vibe that they can give off is "over it" or " reat-2-go".

Not this crew....

I mean, they were groovin and movin and dancin to the beat....

Me like-y. Me Love-it..... Me can't wait to go again.
